Snow Dragon Melters
Diesel fired portable snowmelters are the most popular models since you can move them from site to Site as self-contained units. However, all Snow Dragons are also available as stationary units,-in-ground, or can be built on a skid for placement on a roll away truck. Current portable snowmelters come with a debris catch area with optional baskets for manual removal of debris – even during operation. Automatic/hydraulic options, are available or customized debris removal processes can be quoted.
Snow melting The Snow Dragons Way
The Snow Dragon Snow melting Way (Patent # 7,814,898) uses enclosed heat exchanger technology partnered with a high level agitation occurrence from the direct spray system and melt pan. This enclosed system does not allow any burner/(lame contaminants to be introduced to the discharge water and does not create an oxygen deficient plume found with submerged combustion technology. Water exits through a gravity weir system where debris, trash, oils, and other non-solubles stay inside the melter — allowing water to exit cleaner than the snow being loaded into it. The discharge comes out fast and warm to prevent refreezing. You can park near or over a storm drain, catch basin, or hook up a hose and divert the discharge to another location.

Although snow melting was conceived through necessity over 30 years ago for airports and large metropolitan areas, affordable advances in snow melting technology remained elusive, until now. In 2004, Snow Dragon was born into the Park Ohio family .
Park-Ohio Holding Corporation (NASDAQ – PKOH) is a diversified manufacturing services and products holding company with over 3,000 employees operating in over 80 locations in 16 countries. The strength and engineering successes within Park-Ohio touches many parts of the world such as the automotive, aerospace, locomotive, transportation, specialty, medical, and electronic industries.
As the Chairman of Park Ohio Holdings Corporation, Mr. Edward Crawford, stated, “We are revolutionizing the snow industry by bringing melting ‘ technology to everyone who moves snow, and we are doing this globally”.
Snow Dragon is an affordable, patented, heat-transfer snow melting process that changes the rules of the game by offering a line of snowmelts to fit the needs of any application.
Understanding Snowmelters – Know Your BTU’s
When purchasing a car you know that the gallons per mile or liters per kilometer are based on the same standards either with Ford, Honda, or Mitsubishi. All car manufacturers use the same standard. Unfortunately it’s not the same with snowmelters.
Currently NO standard has been set in the Snow Industry on how snowmelters should be rated in terms of tons/hour. What this means to you? Different manufacturers rate their equipment based on different equations and variables, resulting in confusion when trying to compare snowmelters. There is one common denominator in all snowmelters – BTU required or BTU rating. BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a measurement of heat energy and should be used when comparing snowmelters to assure true comparison.
Melting snow is nothing more than the transition of a solid substance into a liquid , (i.e. turning ice/snow into water). Each specific mass has an exact point where this transition occurs and requires a specific amount of energy to take place. This is called “Latent Heat of Fusion”. Since there is no specific mass of snow due to variance of density & water content, the Latent Heat of Ice (144 BTU) is used.
Melting vs Hauling
The typical snow removal process requires 1) allowing areas for ‘snow piles or 2) hauling offsite. Both practices have become less attractive due to variable factors such as rising fuel costs, scarcity of dump sites, increasing labor costs, loss of parking, as well as security, safety and environmental issues. If you are currently hauling snow, look at your previous winter seasons and compare your snow removal costs with the operating costs of a melter. Many times even when the costs seem to be close, the ability to melt snow onsite and offer this service puts you at the forefront of the Industry and can allow diversification of your business and/or services. Snow acts as a giant atmospheric filter, collecting chemicals and other contaminants. When the snow melts, these contaminants enter the surface and soil water. By melting the snow after a storm event, you remove this contamination filter layer before it starts collecting chemicals and impurities from the atmosphere. For areas that require specific stormwater regulations, Snow Dragon is working with a number of filtering companies that can give you the results you need. From filter socks, pipe socks, to complete filter systems, we have the ability to grow with your regulations for years to come.
