Snow melting The Snow Dragons Way

The Snow Dragon Snow melting Way (Patent # 7,814,898) uses enclosed heat exchanger technology partnered with a high level agitation occurrence from the direct spray system and melt pan. This enclosed system does not allow any burner/(lame contaminants to be introduced to the discharge water and does not create an oxygen deficient plume found with submerged combustion technology. Water exits through a gravity weir system where debris, trash, oils, and other non-solubles stay inside the melter — allowing water to exit cleaner than the snow being loaded into it. The discharge comes out fast and warm to prevent refreezing. You can park near or over a storm drain, catch basin, or hook up a hose and divert the discharge to another location.

Understanding Snowmelters – Know Your BTU’s

When purchasing a car you know that the gallons per mile or liters per kilometer are based on the same standards either with Ford, Honda, or Mitsubishi. All car manufacturers use the same standard. Unfortunately it’s not the same with snowmelters.

Currently NO standard has been set in the Snow Industry on how snowmelters should be rated in terms of tons/hour. What this means to you? Different manufacturers rate their equipment based on different equations and variables, resulting in confusion when trying to compare snowmelters. There is one common denominator in all snowmelters – BTU required or BTU rating. BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a measurement of heat energy and should be used when comparing snowmelters to assure true comparison.

Melting snow is nothing more than the transition of a solid substance into a liquid , (i.e. turning ice/snow into water). Each specific mass has an exact point where this transition occurs and requires a specific amount of energy to take place. This is called “Latent Heat of Fusion”. Since there is no specific mass of snow due to variance of density & water content, the Latent Heat of Ice (144 BTU) is used.
